What is rattan?
The rattan is a cane of Asian origin belonging to a species of climbing palm of the genus Calamus. It is very light, strong and flexible. There is a great diversity of rattan species, but only a few are suitable for making furniture.
Rattan derivatives
All the rattan cane is usable. From its bark that is used to make fabrics and knots to its internal fiber or pith, which is where wicker is obtained. Some derivatives or by-products of the rattan palm are natural wicker, rattan shell, rattan grid, rattan headband and liana.
Uses of rattan
Being a light and solid raw material, it is very practical for making handicrafts and furniture. One of the main characteristics of a rattan and wicker furniture is its ease of movement due to its lightness. Such furniture is generally used for patios and porches, however its use inside homes is also very common.
